Arizona is the only state on this registry with two registered producers, and the two of them are a study in how differently American beef can be raised inside one state. Arizona Grass Raised Beef runs cattle on open range near Dewey, in the high country north of Phoenix, on native grasses and flowers across millions of acres. The state's climate gives grass in different parts of the state at different times of year, so the herds move to greener country and graze all twelve months rather than coming off grass into a feedlot.
Two hundred miles south, at Eloy, Family Roots Farm does the opposite on purpose. It is a full circle farm: the American Wagyu herd eats alfalfa, corn, barley, bermuda, triticale and oats grown on the family's own ground, with local supplements and minerals, and the manure and straw goes back onto the same crops.
Processing is local in both cases. Arizona Grass Raised Beef cuts in its own USDA inspected plant and dry ages and hand cuts every order, which is unusual for an operation this size and is the reason it can ship frozen anywhere in the country. Family Roots Farm uses a local USDA inspected processor and sells to Arizona families with local delivery.
So a buyer in Arizona has a genuine choice: 100 percent grass fed and grass finished beef by the cut, the box or the whole animal, or grain fed American Wagyu by the cut, the bundle or the quarter, half and whole.
