Accessibility statement.

We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We are not claiming full conformance, because a claim like that should come with an audit, and this is a statement of target and commitment instead.

What has been done.

Specific measures built into every page of this site, not a general statement of intent.

  • A skip to content link as the first focusable element on every page.
  • Landmark regions on every page: header, navigation, main and footer, and one h1 per page with heading levels that never skip.
  • A visible focus outline on every interactive element, in two variants so it clears contrast on both the light paper and the navy ground. No outline is removed anywhere without a replacement.
  • A keyboard operable navigation menu, including a mobile panel that traps focus while open and returns focus to the toggle when it closes.
  • Every form input has an associated label, required fields are marked in the label as well as in the attribute, and every icon only button carries an accessible name.
  • Color contrast checked against the real palette. Every text and background pair used on the site meets at least 4.5 to 1 for body text and 3 to 1 for large text and interface components.
  • Link text that describes where it goes. Where a card grid would otherwise produce a row of identical link labels, each one carries hidden text naming its destination.
  • Animations respect the reduced motion preference, including the map's zoom easing, which is disabled entirely when that preference is set.
  • Interactive targets are at least 44 pixels tall wherever a finger has to hit them.

The interactive map.

The map is the visual centerpiece of this site, so it needs its own paragraph. Every producer on the map is reachable by keyboard: each marker is a focusable link in a sensible order, Enter opens that ranch's profile, and Escape closes an open tooltip. The map itself pans with the arrow keys and zooms with the plus and minus keys when it has focus, and it carries plus, minus and Reset View buttons as well as a state select, so nothing needs a scroll wheel or a trackpad gesture.

More importantly, the same data is rendered as a text list beside the map, on the server, in the page itself. No information on this site is available only through the map. Browse by State and the producer registry are complete equivalents, and every producer appears in all three.

Where we know there is more to do.

Pan and zoom on a map is inherently a visual interaction, and while every ranch is reachable without it, the experience of exploring the country is not equivalent for somebody who cannot see the map. The list, the state pages and the registry are how we answer that today, and we would rather say so than claim otherwise.

We have not commissioned an independent accessibility audit. When we do, what it finds will be recorded here.
